KOTURA is a Bristol Channel Cutter 28 built in 1982. She was designed by Lyle Hess, the hull was built by Sam Morse in California and the boat was finished by Channel Cutter Yachts in Canada. Kotura is a true gem of a boat. The owners have kept her in near pristine condition on deck and down below. They were the 3rd owners and have thoroughly enjoyed sailing Kotura for the last 3 years.
Kotura is powered by a single cylinder Sabb 10HP diesel engine that pushes her along between 5.5 6 knots with a reverse pitch propeller. Her hull appears to be in excellent condition as well as her decks and rigging. The standing rigging was recently inspected, the UHMW mast step is new, all the finished wood on deck was wooded 1 year ago and coated with Cetol, her decks were recently reefed and re-caulked and her bow sprit is new, made from Douglas Fir by the Shipwright s Coop in Port Townsend, WA. The North Sail main is in good condition and the Jib and Staysail are both on Furlers, controlled from the cockpit. To charge the AGM sealed battery is a 10amp Marinco Charge Pro battery charger. Pulling up the 35lb CQR and BBB chain is easy with the Electric Lofrans Windlass and there is an Anchor & Deck Wash Down System for quick easy clean-ups.
Entering the cabin through the main companionway hatch takes you down a ladder into the beautifully varnished interior. There are two quarter-berths aft that are wide and comfortable. To port is a nicely laid out galley with a Dickinson Pacific Diesel Stove, 2-burner Propane Stove, lots of storage and a sink with fresh and salt water electric pumps and a manual fresh water pump for underway. All interior lights are LED and above the Chart Table on starboard is a red or white LED light for night time vision. Above the chart table is the electronics panel and a Raytheon RADAR, Seafarer Depth Sounder and NDi VHF radio. Below the Chart Table is an Ice-Box and storage. She also has a stereo/CD Player down below with Salon speakers. Forward of the Galley and Chart Table is the Salon with two large settee s on either side with storage above, behind and below (these two settees could easily be joined to make a large double if the new owners desired). Forward of the Salon is storage on starboard and port with nice closet space and cubby space. The head is located at the peak and is professionally engineered to easily disappear when not in use with a varnished hinged wood cabinet that easily lifts and lowers into place. The owners have engineered the toilet so that it can slide forward under the forward scuttle hatch for increased head-room, if so desired. The head is an Airhead Composting Toilet which means No-Smells and No-Clogs. The Head uses coconut bricks to break down the waste to a dirt like material which is easy to handle. There are two 6-volt motorcycle batteries forward to power the head fan that charge off of a solar panel on deck. Kotura has been incredibly well cared for and is in near showroom condition.
Classic Cruiser with ocean-crossing capability, these versatile ships ferried crew and cargo from ships at anchor to the shore, so they needed to be fast and nimble. This one has undergone a three-year period of upgrade under a caring owner after being pretty well treated all her life. She made a single-handed direct trip from Port Townsend, WA to San Diego, CA and recently from Channel Islands up to San Francisco. New sails, electronics, windvane... there's a long list.
