Additional Information

Humdinger, a 35’ trimaran, was designed and built for Donald Young and Shirley Weese by Walter Greene, Greene Marine,Yarmouth, Maine, 1982. The couple sailed the boat across the Atlantic through 5 galesto get to the start of the 1982 Round Britain and Ireland Race at Plymouth England. The race was for double handed crews, had 4 stops, and a distance of about 1865 miles. They finished third in class(boats 30’ to 35’)and 13th overall in a fleet of 69 finishers. The next event was the French single handed trans Atlantic race, the 1982 Route du Rhum. In the 1978 Route du Rhum Mike Birch’s winning Greene trimaran was sailed under the name "Olympus Photo". In 1982, Humdinger was chartered to the German sailor Klaus Schroat and raced under the name "Aspen", finishing in 23 Days and 18 hours. Because Humdinger finished The Route du Rhum, it qualifies for the French multihull organization the "Golden Oldies". In approximately the mid 1990s, the owners moved to the Seattle area, shipping the boat overland. Russell Brown of Port Townsend, WA, rebuilt the boat including a new rotating mast to a design by Roger Hatfield of Gold Coast Yachts. The boat was sailed in the 1998 Swiftsure Lightship Classic to 1st place, multihull division. Humdinger was sold to Lawrence Olsen in 1999and moved to San Francisco Bay.While the boat was sailed in many crewed events in and around the bay, the focus shifted to single and double handed events. Some highlights include:2010 Single-Handed Farallones 1st place Multihull division.2011 SSS Longpac 2nd to finish behind the Class 40 "California Condor".2011 Single-Handed Farallones 1st placeMultihulls and Overall2014 Pacific Cup 1st place Hokulea (Multihull) division. The boat was sailed back to S.F. Bay from Oahu in 18 days, motoring only to enter the Golden Gate, plus 4 hours in the Pacific High..The first running of the Route du Rhum in 1978 was won by Mike Birch in the Walter Greene trimaran, A Capella.(Humdinger is a sister ship to A Capella).
