LLYR is a Roberts 53' ketch commissioned in 2002 as the personal vessel of American NOAA mapper, Captain Ben Smith. She's a modified Bruce Roberts 45' steel ketch with a 16' beam, full keel and skeg rudder. She has a raked bow with a rounded chine. The rudder is on an extended rudder shoe, and the transom is plumb with a boarding ladder. She has an 80 hp freshwater cooled Perkins diesel engine, carries 193 gallons of fuel, 343 gallons of fresh water and 35 gallons waste water. On deck forward is a welded-on steel bowsprit with double anchor bow rollers, stainless steel bow railing, and genoa furling unit. Aft of the sprit are the anchor lockers, twin stays for the staysail, and an electric anchor windlass. Moving aft from the foredeck, the raised cabin trunk is fitted with stainless steel handrails and Lewmar deck hatches on top and opening ports along the sides. Further aft, the cabin trunk steps up to form the pilothouse, which has fixed windows on all sides. The decks are surrounded by short gunwales and stainless steel lifeline stanchions with double courses of lifeline wire. The cockpit has built-in surround-bench seating and a console-mounted stainless steel wheel. The steering console is fitted with folding table leaves and also supports engine controls and a Raymarine hybrid-touch multifunction chart plotter. The aft deck area is flush and is fitted with four deck hatches that open to the LPG tank locker and deck gear storage. The aft deck is surrounded by stainless steel railings. There is a set of dinghy davits over the transom.

She is roomy and bright with a high freeboard that opens up 9' of clearance making plenty of headroom and no tight squeezes moving fore or aft. The interior cockpit, salon, and galley that are paneled in sunny white Baltic birch with teak trim. There are 27 windows and 7 Moonlight hatches on Llyr.
The cabin is accessed by a companionway sliding hatch at the forward side of the cockpit. The hatch is secured with swinging doors and hatch boards. Just inside the hatch to starboard at the top of the ladder is the pilothouse helm station with wheel helm and full engine controls and instrumentation. VHF and SSB radios are mounted starboard of the helm in the pilothouse. The cabin spaces are arranged, starting forward, with port and starboard private cabins, each with double berths. Walking aft is an enclosed head with shower to port, followed by a diesel heater and galley with top-loading reefer, three-burner stove with oven, and double stainless steel sinks. Aft of the galley is a door that leads into the engine room, which also houses one of the fuel tanks, waste tank, and water pressure pump. Opposite the head and diesel heater is the U-shaped dining settee. Aft of the settee is the starboard side passageway that leads aft to the aft cabin and head. Along the passageway's outboard side is a navigation desk and single berth with the second fuel tank below. The aft cabin has single berths to port and starboard and an enclosed head with shower forward to port.
From her large stainless chain-plates welded to the deck to robust wire sizes and numerous stays and shrouds Llyr is considered by riggers overbuilt for strength.
Her mast and spars are of high quality and good condition
She has large Anderson and Harkin winches. A new Harken MKIV furler+stay system was installed for her new Genoa headsail as well as a large customized Forespar spinnaker pole and tackle for downwind sailing.
All of her 7 hatches and 10 cockpit windows were replaced with Diamond Sea Glaze 3/4" tempered storm-glass in 2011
At her stern there are four deep lazzaretts. Forward her generous dual hatch chain locker houses gear for Llyr's four anchors, hydraulic windlass, as well as a complete complement of spare sails, 18' Paratech parachute and over 400 meters of heavy thimbled double bright rope for deep water anchoring.
