SHANNON is a venerable blue water cruiser that was designed by Dick Zaal and built in Holland by Conyplex Marine (Contest Yachts). Contest still builds iconic and sought-after sailing yachts today. All Contest Yachts are built to Lloyds standards and are comparable in quality to any domestic high-end boutique builder. Contest's of this era are very similar to many Hallberg Rassy designs.

Construction Notes:
The builder Contest Yachts, in
moved to larger more semi-custom designs. These are great yachts, little seen in the USA
but admired in Europe.
The hull and deck are balsa cored with solid GDP at all area of stress. The thinnest lay up of
solid glass parts is over 1/2" thick and the areas at the mast step are 2 1/2" and at the keel
are 3".
The joinery is excellent with up to 11 coats of varnish, rubbed effect in most areas except
the head. All bulkheads are properly tapped to the hull to the core of the plywood.
The keels are cast iron and the hull has a recess to accommodate a flange atop the keel
casting. The deep fin has 8 pairs of keel bolts which distribute the loads far better than CL
bolts.
Holland, began
The rudder is fully skegged and the shaft is protected in a "log" or fairing so there is no
with smaller boats and over the years has
vulnerable strut as seen on many boats.
The cockpit is one of the crew and guests' favorite spots. With almost 8 feet long and great
protection from the elements it is both comfortable and social. With Winch Seats in place at
the aft end of the cockpit and lounging on the aft cabin parties up to 12 can be entertained
easily while sailing. Of course, the fiddles on the cockpit table are key to keeping those
munchies at the ready.
The head room is min 6'2 throughout. It has a large U shaped galley and a full size separate
nav station. The cockpit is quite large and well protected with Whitlock pedestal and
rod steering. Tanks are constructed of S.Stl. There is handy stern boarding/swim ladder.
The rig is by Selden and is Deck stepped. The standing rigging is S.Stl Both Main and
Mizzen masts are rigged individually without a triatic stay for simplicity and redundancy.
One of the best attributes about her, though, is the way she behaves. Her manners are so
refined and gentle. Her wheel stays light even in more aggressive conditions and her
balance is remarkable. The boat balances well and steered easily by the autopilot or
helmsman. Her relatively short spreaders give her good up-wind angles. She well under
power with her large rudder able to turn easily. Coming alongside quays is easy using a
single mid-spring or line to the primary winches which allows easy control from cockpit.
