The yacht LITTLE PACKET was designed and built in 1958 by Lester Stone, a renowned third generation boat builder on San Francisco Bay. She was built as the flagship for the Commodore of the St. Francis Yacht Club.

She is a proper yacht with varnished spruce spars a d abundant Honduran mahogany varnished trim. Her simply plywood painted canvas decks, plywood house and plywood furniture and the quality of construction have helped her age well. She was refastened with thousands of stainless steel screws in 2005. 

LITTLE PACKET, along with her sistership SCAMP, were built at a time when wooden boats were giving way to that new-fangled fiberglass.Lester Stone and his crew of seasoned craftsmen, knew how to build a traditional carvel planked hull of mahogany on oak, but they also knew that a house made of plywood with oak framing and covered with a painted canvas decking, would wear well and not leak. Her decks, cabin and interior furniture are all made of plywood, but of a quality of plywood that is impossible to find today. The one inch plywood house sides are extremely strong and tight and do not leak. The house is bolted to the deck through a 3" x 4" solid oak carline, which is first through bolted to the deck beams with the plywood deck sandwiched in between. This arrangement is capped on the inside of the cabin by a 6" x 1/2" piece of varnished mahogany that provides a nice handrail for the entire length of the cabin, a drip catch for any condensation that comes off the port lights and a nifty catch-all for stowing small necessities, such as matches, the wick trimmer for the Aladdin lamp and the clock winder. 

All seven of the plywood bulkheads that divide up the interior are screwed to a deck beam on one side and to a frame on the other side, yet the spacing of the deck beams and the hull frames are quite different. The designer has managed to incorporate the correct size bunks, head, galley and hanging locker into this well thought out 33' beauty. 

The bulkheads are made of 3/4" plywood and screwed together, adding immense strength to the hull. The middle of the cabin sole is removable for easy bilge access, but the remainder of the sole and the cabin furniture is put together with large bronze screws that adds greatly to the integrity of the hull. When the boat is under sail and moving rapidly through the water, the hull is solid with no movement, making it quiet down below. 

Cracks in a carvel planked hull are typical, however, LITTLE PACKET is so solidly built, that there are very few cracks developed over the year, as the hull moves very little as a result of the plywood decks, house, interior bulkheads and structural furniture. Also, the long chainplates incorporated into the hull make a difference with keeping the hull solid and not moving. The interior structure around the chainplates includes a hanging locker to starboard and a small head to port. Both are strong 3/4" plywood boxes that tie to deck beams, frames, clamps, shelves and cabin sole. The cabin sole is screwed to frames and floors. The plywood overhead is doubled in way of the mast and there are large mast partners with cabin beams to stiffen the structure. The mast step is a substantial piece of oak that spans five large floor beams. 

The bottomline is that the hull is so well built and reinforced by the plywood decks and furniture, that the hull virtually does not move much at all.
